Additional Links

In addition to the Dorian mode and Homophony, there are a few other links between these pieces that can show links between the styles of music:

  • Time Signature: Both Credo and So What are principally in 4/4 time. Simple quadruple time was quite common in both classical music and jazz, though in jazz 3/4 time is as common. But this can pose a small link between the two.

  • A Range of instruments: A mixture of these different types of instruments in both brings out interesting textures and timbre for both Beethoven and Miles Davis. Although there are extremely different instruments, we can definitely draw parallels between the roles of them. The orchestra in 'Credo' is similiar to the accompaniment (piano, bass, saxophone, percussion) in 'So What' while the trumpet in 'So What' and the voice in 'Credo' have similar lead roles.

  • Dynamics: Both Credo and So What have interesting and somewhat similar dynamic backgrounds. Credo's different sections have either forte or piano, with no terrace dynamics whatsoever. Similarly, So What has no terrace dynamics and the D Dorian section is relatively softer than the pick up in dynamics in the E flat Dorian section. Therefore, like Credo, the different sections show different dynamic backgrounds.
